Salalah hosts workshop on statistical data exchange

Salalah: A training workshop on "Using Statistical Data and Metadata Exchange (SDMX) for Reporting on Sustainable Development Goals in GCC Countries" commenced on Tuesday in Salalah, Governorate of Dhofar.

The three-day event is organised by the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Gulf States (GCC-Stat), in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the United Nations Statistics Division.

The workshop programme encompasses a range of training modules, including an assessment of the status of GCC indicator data against the databases of the Gulf Statistical Centre, an evaluation of the current reporting status between the Centre and member states, as well as training on SDMX concepts, the Sustainable Development Goals Data Structure Definition (SDG DSD) and the fundamentals of the SDMX conversion tool.

The training agenda further includes sessions on customising national data structures to suit the needs of GCC member states, workshops on structural metadata, data flows, and content constraints, advanced training on the SDMX conversion tool, and practical exercises for transforming national data into standard SDMX formats.

The workshop aims to introduce participants to the international SDMX standard, equip them with the requisite skills for reporting on SDG indicator data, and thereby contribute to enhancing data accuracy and quality, improving reporting mechanisms, and fulfilling the requirements of national, regional, and international entities and organisations—ultimately supporting the ongoing monitoring of progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
