Muscat: Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) organised an extensive orientation meeting today targeting civil society organisations, United Nations offices operating in the Sultanate of Oman, human rights experts, representatives of community initiatives, academics, and researchers, with the aim of introducing the Commission’s role, its new legal framework, and its independence.

In an opening speech, Professor Dr. Rashid Hamad Al Balushi, Chairman of Oman Human Rights Commission, emphasised the importance of establishing a new and advanced phase of strategic partnership and integration between the Commission and civil society organisations.

He praised the pivotal role undertaken by civil society, which was demonstrated by the participation of its institutions in analytical workshops to draft the National Strategy for Human Rights in the Sultanate of Oman.

He explained that the reorganization of the Commission comes within the framework of the Sultanate of Oman’s commitment to the provisions of the Basic Statute of the State as well as the international charters and conventions it has joined, pointing out that this step represents a qualitative leap in the course of the Commission’s work.

The meeting’s programme included the presentation of three main working papers that addressed the new legal frameworks of the Commission, ways to enhance the partnership with civil society organisations, and a review of modern mechanisms and technologies used in monitoring and receiving complaints in accordance with international standards.
