Chasing the Chill: Oman’s mountains steal the spotlight this long weekend

Muscat: As Oman gears up for a long weekend, attention has turned to hotels and the expected surge in domestic travel driven by the extended holiday break.

With Accession Day falling on Thursday, January 15, 2026, and Isra wal Mi‘raj holiday on on Sunday, citizens and residents are set to enjoy a prolonged January break when combined with the weekend on Friday and Saturday.

Against this backdrop, Times of Oman spoke to leading hoteliers to understand booking trends and staycation demand during the festive period.

“We have witnessed an increase in bookings for this weekend,” said Jagdeep Thakral, General Manager of dusitD2 Naseem Resort, highlighting strong demand from local travellers.

He added that the hotel is offering complimentary dinner to guests who have done direct bookings.

As temperatures continue to dip across the Sultanate, the Al Hajar mountain range—particularly Jabal Akhdar and Jabal Shams—has emerged as the preferred winter escape for residents seeking cooler climates.

Jabal Shams, Oman’s highest peak, recorded one of the lowest temperatures in the country on Tuesday, with the mercury dropping to 2.9 degrees Celsius. Saiq recorded the lowest temperature nationwide at 2.4 degrees Celsius.

Although snowfall has not occurred this year, the crisp mountain air and dramatic landscapes continue to draw visitors.

“Oman’s mountain ranges captivate with a breathtaking variety that appeals to both nature lovers and adventure seekers,” said Akbar Abbas, Resort Manager of The VIEW Oman.

“The rugged peaks and deep gorges of Jabal Shams, along with the lush terraces of Jabal Akhdar, offer unforgettable experiences.”

Echoing similar sentiments, James Reeves, General Manager at the Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar Resort & Spa, said long weekends consistently boost domestic tourism.

“We have already been receiving a large number of inquiries for the coming days,” he noted.

Adding to the seasonal appeal, Jala Spa & Wellness at Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar Resort & Spa is offering guests a chance to unwind and rejuvenate. Advanced healing practitioner Rajeshwari Nerukar has returned for a six-week residency until January 31, 2026, providing specialised energy therapies aimed at restoring balance and wellbeing after the hectic festive season.

Beyond its cool temperatures, Jabal Akhdar continues to attract visitors with its unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Terraced farms, ancient villages and sweeping mountain views provide a tranquil retreat from urban life. “The region offers immense natural beauty, cultural richness and untold stories,” said Reeves.

“I am excited for our guests to discover this special neighbourhood—from exploring ancient villages to enjoying the cool tranquillity of the mountain air and indulging in rejuvenating wellness treatments. Every stay is designed to be a curated collection of unforgettable moments.”

Hoteliers also emphasised the distinctive charm of celebrating the festive season in the mountains. “At 2,000 metres above sea level, where stars twinkle a little brighter and holiday magic arrives just a touch earlier, the experience is truly magical,” one hotelier said.

Oman’s mountainous regions have long been a favourite winter destination for both locals and tourists. With the extended holiday period, families, groups and adventure enthusiasts are expected to flock to the highlands for activities such as hiking, stargazing and exploring rugged terrain, while others seek relaxation amid serene surroundings.

Whether it is the dramatic cliffs of Jabal Shams or the verdant terraces of Jabal Akhdar, Oman’s mountains continue to showcase the Sultanate’s diverse landscape and promise memorable holiday experiences.

“Every visit to the mountains is an opportunity to create unforgettable memories,” Abbas said. “This long holiday and upcoming weekend are no exception.”

With clean air, clear skies and uninterrupted mountain views ideal for stargazing, Oman’s Al Hajar range stands ready to welcome visitors seeking an extraordinary winter escape.
