Oman records fewer births and deaths in first half of 2026

Muscat: Oman recorded declines in both births and deaths during the first half of 2026, according to the latest figures, with live births falling by 1.7 percent and deaths dropping by 7.3 percent compared to the same period last year.

Official statistics from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) showed that 32,405 live births were registered by the end of June 2026.

Of these, 28,828 were born to Omani parents and 3,577 to expatriate families.

Among Omani births, 14,793 were boys and 14,035 were girls. Expatriate births comprised 1,847 boys and 1,730 girls.

In June 2026 alone, Oman recorded 5,560 live births, down from 5,665 in May.

The monthly total included 4,958 Omani births and 602 expatriate births.

The data showed that births among Omani females registered the largest year-on-year decline, falling 3.7 per cent, while births among Omani males edged up 0.3 per cent. Births among expatriates declined 2 percent, with male births down 1.5 percent and female births down 2.4 per cent.

The number of deaths also continued to decline.

A total of 4,590 deaths were recorded across the Sultanate by the end of June, representing a 7.3 per cent decrease from the corresponding period in 2025.

Deaths among Omani nationals fell 6.6 per cent to 3,646, including 2,106 males and 1,540 females.

Expatriate deaths dropped 9.9 percent to 944, comprising 759 males and 185 females.

During June 2026, 736 deaths were registered, compared with 768 in May.

The June figures included 590 Omani and 146 expatriate deaths.

Female deaths declined more sharply than male deaths.

Deaths among Omani women fell 10.6 percent, compared with a 3.8 percent decline among Omani men. Among expatriates, female deaths dropped 16.7 per cent, while male deaths declined 8.3 per cent.

The figures are provisional and do not include births and deaths occurring outside the Sultanate.
