UTAS Council discusses updates on institutional performance

Muscat: The Council of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) held its third meeting for the academic year 2025/2026 at the university's headquarters in Muscat on Thursday. The meeting was chaired by Anwar Hilal Al Jabri, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, and Chairman of the University Council.

The Council reviewed the follow-up report on the implementation of the decisions from the second meeting of the academic year 2025/2026. It examined the level of progress in executing the decisions issued in the previous meeting, as well as the measures taken by various academic and administrative sectors of the university. This contributes to ensuring the execution of decisions within the specified timeframes and achieving their desired objectives.

Furthermore, the Council discussed several topics, including the student conduct regulations and 12 university policies. These policies relate to council management, information security, benchmarking, academic integrity, the development and review of academic programmes, student complaints and grievances, human resources management, asset management, health and safety, scientific research ethics, scientific publishing, and community and industrial sector engagement. This falls within the framework of supporting the continuous development process, enhancing the university's efforts to elevate the higher education, scientific research, and innovation ecosystem, and achieving its strategic aspirations during the upcoming phase.

During the meeting, the Council approved the admission plan for the academic year 2026/2027, estimated at 12,000 male and female students, in coordination with the Higher Education Admission Centre at the Ministry of Education.

Additionally, it approved the awarding of academic degrees to students who successfully completed their graduation requirements in the spring semester of the academic year 2025/2026, totaling 2,112 male and female graduates.

The Council also discussed the follow-up report on the implementation of decisions by circulation issued during the academic year 2025/2026. It reviewed what has been accomplished regarding them across various academic and administrative units, which included a review of the organisational structure of the Advanced Cybersecurity Academy. This is part of the efforts aimed at developing academic programs, enhancing the quality of institutional performance, and consolidating governance principles.

Additionally, the Council was briefed on a presentation addressing the executive status of the university's QS World University Rankings project. It approved a proposal to introduce a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy program at the College of Applied Sciences and Pharmacy, alongside a presentation on the performance indicators and achievements realised by the university within the targets of Oman Vision 2040.
