Shura Committee reviews farmers' demands to support food security in Oman

Muscat: The Food and Water Security Committee of the Shura Council held its ninth regular meeting of the Third Annual Sitting (2025–2026) to review issues related to agricultural sustainability and food security in the Sultanate of Oman.

Chaired by Abdullah Al Malik Al Shuhi, the committee examined a letter from the Omani Agricultural Association in Dhofar Governorate concerning the situation of Najd Farms. The letter outlined key challenges facing farmers and proposed measures to strengthen the sustainability and productivity of agricultural activities in the region.

The committee stressed the importance of addressing the issues raised, particularly calls to reduce farm usufruct fees and take into account the circumstances of local farmers when setting such charges. Members noted that balancing agricultural investment requirements with support for local farmers would help sustain farming activities and contribute to the Sultanate's food security goals.

The meeting forms part of the committee's ongoing efforts to monitor challenges affecting the agricultural sector, engage with farmers' concerns, and develop recommendations that support sustainable agricultural development and strengthen food and water security across Oman.
