Complex colon tumour surgery performed at Sur Hospital

Sur: A specialised surgical team in the Department of Surgery at Sur Referral Hospital, in collaboration with the Royal Hospital, has successfully performed a complex, high-difficulty surgical procedure to resect a stage-four colon tumour that was adherent to the abdominal wall, the right fallopian tube, and the ovary. The operation lasted three hours.

Dr. Badr Rashid Al Jaafari, Head of the Department of Surgery at Sur Hospital, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the procedure was successfully completed, with the tumor—measuring approximately 12 centimetres—resected entirely along with the adhered structures, while maintaining the highest standards of surgical safety for the patient.

He added that this type of complex surgery was previously performed exclusively at Royal Hospital.

However, its successful completion at Sur Referral Hospital reflects the advancement of specialised medical services in the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman and strengthens the capacity of governorate-level hospitals to manage complex cases.

Dr. Al Jaafari affirmed that the collaboration between the Royal Hospital and Sur Hospital is part of the integrated strategy among health institutions in the Sultanate of Oman, aimed at exchanging expertise, developing national medical competencies, and delivering high-quality healthcare services to citizens within their own governorates.

He noted that performing such procedures represents a qualitative leap in Oman’s healthcare system and underscores the success of the Ministry of Health’s efforts to enhance advanced surgical capabilities across the governorates.

Regarding future plans to expand the scope of specialised surgical procedures at Sur Hospital, he indicated that there are strategic plans to broaden the range of specialised surgeries, with ongoing work to strengthen surgical services and establish supporting specialised units, including vascular surgery and urology, in line with evolving health needs and to enhance the hospital’s capacity to manage various complex cases.

He emphasised that this success reflects the readiness of Sur Referral Hospital in terms of advanced surgical equipment and technologies, along with the high competence of the national medical workforce, which contributed to performing the procedure with precision and in accordance with the highest standards, thereby ensuring patient safety and elevating the standard of care for complex and advanced cases.

Dr. Al Jaafari explained that the success of such operations enhances patient confidence in specialised healthcare services within their own governorates and reduces the need for transfer to referral hospitals in Muscat, positively impacting the timeliness of treatment and alleviating burdens on patients and their families.

This achievement represents a significant addition to the record of medical accomplishments in the Sultanate of Oman and confirms continued progress in localizing specialized services and improving the quality of healthcare across the governorates.
