Geneva: The Sultanate of Oman is taking part in the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA79) currently being held in Geneva.
Commenting about on the two articles pertaining to readiness and response to health emergencies, as part of measures to implement the International Health Regulations (2005), Oman stressed the importance of consolidating global health governance and developing coordination mechanisms amid growing global challenges related to climate change and cross-border hazards.
Oman is setting an example in this respect by moving steadily towards developing its national epidemiological surveillance systems, raising the diagnostic capabilities of reference laboratories, updating emergency plans according to the “One Health” approach and establishing integrated digital platforms for managing emergencies.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Dr. Rashid Mohammed Al Alawi, Director General of Khoula Hospital, stressed that preparedness for health emergencies is an institutional duty that cannot be compromised. He affirmed that Khoula Hospital is maintaining rapid response plans and has groomed qualified staff capable of working during the most difficult circumstances.
Dr. Rashid said that a comprehensive information system is being developed in a manner that aligns monitoring and early warning mechanisms with national and international trends in the field of transfer of knowledge and health technology.
For his part, Dr. Hani Ahmed Al Qadi, Director General of Health Services in Dhofar Governorate, said that International Health Regulations (2005) constitute the cornerstone of a solidarity pact that takes shape in tangible daily procedures—ranging from enhancing preparedness at land, sea and air entry to upgrading the efficiency of reference laboratories and updating emergency plans according to the One Health approach.
Dr. Hani pointed out that climate challenges facing the region have made coordination between the sectors of health, environment and agriculture a necessity, not an option. He added that this calls for more investment in the respective spheres.
