Muscat: The crew member who was killed while on duty in the engine room of the oil tanker that was hit off the coast of Muscat has been confirmed to be an Indian national.
The incident occurred on Monday, March 2, 2026, approximately 52 nautical miles off the coast of Muscat at the time of the blast.
The vessel’s remaining 21 crew members—comprising 16 Indians, four Bangladeshis, and one Ukrainian—were successfully evacuated.
According to the Ministry of Defence and the Maritime Security Centre, the tanker was targeted by an unmanned, bomb-carrying drone boat while transporting roughly 59,463 metric tonnes of cargo. The impact caused a significant fire and explosion within the vessel’s main engine room.
The Indian Embassy in Oman on it's X account said: "Mission remains in constant touch with Omani authorities who are carrying out search operations for missing crew members following the incident involving MV Skylight. We are also coordinating with officials in Oman for the repatriation of the crew members who have been rescued from MV Skylight and will continue to render all possible assistance in the matter."
