Tunnel Excavation Begins for Oman-UAE Joint Railway Network Project

Muscat: Hafit Rail Company, the developer and operator of the Oman-UAE joint railway network project, has announced the commencement of tunnel excavation works in the Hajar Mountains in Al Buraimi Governorate. This milestone marks a transformative phase in the cross-border strategic initiative.

The company stated that it has achieved a series of key milestones in the implementation of the project, affirming that progress is on track and aligned with the planned timeline. Detailed design work has already been completed.

Access roads to the tunnel entrances have been constructed to facilitate the movement of heavy equipment and construction materials. Excavation and blasting operations are currently underway at the tunnel entrances in preparation for full-scale tunneling.

Once the civil works for the tunnels are completed, subsequent phases will include track formation, rail installation, and the implementation of railway systems within the tunnels.

All activities are being carried out in accordance with the highest standards of safety, sustainability, and environmental protection. Advanced engineering technologies and monitoring systems are being employed to ensure structural integrity and safeguard nearby communities, while minimizing environmental impact.

Hafit Rail Company has also received its first shipment of railway tracks via Sohar Port, marking a significant step toward the rail-laying phase. Simultaneously, construction continues in other areas, including excavation, backfilling, and infrastructure development. This includes the construction of 881 culverts and 57 bridges, some reaching heights of up to 34 meters.

With the progress in tunnel works, these achievements represent a pivotal advancement that brings the Oman-UAE joint railway network closer to becoming a key enabler of regional connectivity, cross-border trade, and sustainable economic growth.
