Oman mourns passing of business luminary Sheikh Salim Al Araimi

MUSCAT: Oman’s business and sports fraternity mourned on Saturday the loss of one of its most influential figures, Sheikh Salim bin Said bin Hamed Al Fannah Al Araimi, who passed away on Friday, October 3, 2025.

A pioneering businessman, philanthropist, and advocate for education, Sheikh Salim leaves behind a profound legacy that helped shape the Sultanate’s modern private sector and infrastructure.

As the founder and Chairman of Galfar Engineering & Contracting, Sheikh Salim oversaw its transformation from a small local enterprise into one of the region’s largest engineering firms. Established in 1972, Galfar has been central to Oman’s modernisation, delivering landmark projects across the country. The company’s public listing in 2007 stood as a testament to its scale, credibility, and his visionary leadership.

Beyond his corporate achievements, Sheikh Salim was known for his deep commitment to community development, sports, and philanthropy. He also served as Chairman of Bank Sohar and sat on the board of the Oman Charitable Organisation.

His contributions to Oman's infrastructure and economy were recognised internationally, earning him an honorary doctorate from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2007.

Sheikh Salim’s influence extended far beyond business. A dedicated supporter of education, he served as Chancellor of the National University of Science & Technology (NU) and was instrumental in advancing higher education across the Sultanate.

A passionate advocate for sports, he played a key role in promoting Omani football as a former president of the Oman Football Association (OFA) and maintained close ties with Al Arouba Club.

News of Sheikh Salim’s passing has prompted a wave of condolences from across Oman and the wider Gulf region.

The Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) mourned his demise, recognising his profound impact on the nation’s economic landscape.

Public figures, sports administrators, and former athletes shared heartfelt tributes on social media, honouring his vision, humility, and service to the nation.

The NU — its administration, faculty, staff, and students — also mourned the passing of the Co-Founder and Chancellor of the University with a statement on its official X handle.
