Muscat: The performance of the fisheries sector in the Sultanate of Oman witnessed significant growth with the total value of fish landed from artisanal, coastal, and commercial fishing methods reaching approximately OMR307.308 million by the end of June 2025.
This marks an 8.6 percent increase compared to OMR283.099 million recorded during the same period in 2024.
Preliminary statistical data issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) showed that the total quantity of landed fish reached 467,463 tonnes by the end of June 2025, compared to 430,466 tonnes at the end of June 2024.
This represents an 8.6 percent growth, reflecting a positive and sustainable improvement in fish production across the Sultanate of Oman.
Artisanal fishing quantities increased by 4.4 percent, reaching 339,886 tonnes by the end of June 2025, up from 325,610 tonnes in June 2024.
Al Wusta Governorate recorded the highest quantity of artisanal catch with 124,205 tonnes. It was followed by South A’Sharqiyah Governorate with 91,512 tonnes, North and South Al Batinah Governorates combined recorded 39,278 tonnes; Dhofar Governorate recorded 39,094 tonnes; The quantities in Musandam Governorate reached 28,545 tonnes and in Muscat Governorate the figure reached 17,253 tonnes.
Commercial fishing saw a significant leap, rising by 59 percent to reach 59,411 tonnes by the end of June 2025, compared to 37,367 tonnes in June 2024.
Coastal fishing recorded a one percent increase, reaching 68,165 tonnes compared to 67,490 tonnes during the same period last year.
By type, small pelagic fish topped the artisanal catch list with a quantity of 158,705 tonnes, followed by large pelagic fish with 114,966 tonnes, and then demersal fish with 53,777 tonnes. Quantities of sharks reached approximately 3,591 tonnes, whole crustaceans and mollusks amounted to about 1,675 tonnes. Other unclassified species recorded approximately 7,172 tonnes. _ONA
