GCC Unified Command to implement key steps for enhanced regional security
MUSCAT: The Supreme Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), in its extraordinary session held in Doha on Monday, directed the Council’s Joint Defence Council to convene an urgent meeting, preceded by a session of the Supreme Military Committee, to assess the defence situation of the GCC states in light of the Israeli aggression against the State of Qatar.
Following the meeting of GCC leaders, the Supreme Council also tasked the Unified Military Command with taking executive measures to activate joint defence mechanisms and strengthen Gulf deterrence capabilities.
In its final communiqué, the Supreme Council affirmed the full solidarity of the GCC states with Qatar and the measures it takes to confront the aggression. It stressed that the security of GCC states is indivisible, in accordance with the GCC Charter and the Joint Defence Agreement, under which an attack on one member is considered an attack on all.
The Council strongly condemned Israel’s aggression, calling it a blatant violation of Qatar’s sovereignty, a dangerous escalation, and a grave breach of international law and the United Nations Charter. It warned that such actions constitute a direct threat to Gulf security and regional stability and undermine efforts to achieve peace in the region.
The statement noted that Israel’s continued aggressive policies threaten to unravel existing understandings and agreements and could have serious repercussions for the entire region.
The Council called on the UN Security Council, the international community, and major powers to assume their responsibilities by taking firm, deterrent measures, including effective sanctions, to stop Israel’s violations of international law and humanitarian principles.
The Council further stressed that the aggression obstructs Qatar’s mediation efforts in Gaza to secure a ceasefire, release detainees, and alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people. It said Israel’s repeated aggressions against countries in the region remain a serious obstacle to international and regional peace efforts.
Concluding its session, the Council urged all peace-seeking nations and international organisations to condemn Israel’s aggression against Qatar and its actions in Gaza — including forced displacement, starvation, obstruction of relief work, and attacks on journalists, medical teams, and humanitarian workers — which it described as crimes requiring concerted international action.
