Muscat: A specialised medical team from the Hand Surgery Department at Khoula Hospital has successfully performed a rare and complex surgery to reattach a severed hand and two fingers for a resident who suffered a workplace injury. The intricate operation lasted a continuous 14 hours.
Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Wahaibi, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon and Head of the Hand and Microsurgery Department at Khoula Hospital, stated that the operation’s success hinged on two critical factors: immediate response and proper preservation of the amputated parts in accordance with global protocols, followed by swift and safe transport to the hospital’s advanced hand surgery and replantation center. These steps significantly increased the chances of restoring motor and sensory function to the hand.
He noted that treating multi-part amputations and reconnecting microscopic blood vessels and nerves requires highly skilled professionals and advanced facilities—a testament to the capabilities and growth of Omani medical teams.
The procedure involved bone fixation, sorting of damaged microvessels, removal of dead tissue, and precise reconnection and suturing of ligaments and arteries to ensure proper blood flow and gradual functional recovery of the reattached hand.
Regarding the patient's condition, Dr. Al-Wahaibi confirmed that the patient was in stable condition following surgery, having passed the initial critical phase without complications such as infections or blood clots. Encouraging signs of sensory and motor recovery were observed, and the patient was discharged after a short stay.
He emphasised the importance of hand injury prevention through awareness and caution, especially when handling sharp tools or machinery. Adhering to safety guidelines, using protective gear like gloves, and ensuring equipment is completely shut down before maintenance are vital. Prompt medical attention and correct handling of amputated limbs greatly increase the chance of successful treatment and functional recovery.
Dr. Al-Wahaibi concluded by highlighting that this medical achievement adds to the growing record of advanced surgical milestones in Oman and opens new horizons in treating complex cases—enhancing the quality of healthcare for both citizens and residents.
