Muscat: More than 330,000 Omanis have registered under the national fuel subsidy system until May 23, a new report has said.
According to a report issued by the National Subsidy System, the total number of citizens who have registered for the fuel card is 337,227.
The report stated that North and South Batinah were the most fuel-consuming provinces, with 34.27 per cent of all fuel bought using the card issuing from these two governorates.
They were followed by Muscat with 30,43 per cent, Ad Dakhiliyah with 14.51 per cent, and North and South Al Sharqiyah with 7.80 per cent. While Dhofar had a consumption of 5,10 per cent, Al Dhahirah , Al Buraimi, Al Wusta and Musandam accounted for 4,93 per cent, 2.58 per cent, 1,78 per cent and 0.13 per cent, respectively.
Statistics show that 86 per cent of the total number of people registered for the fuel subsidy were men, while 14 per cent were women. Most of the people who registered were from Al Batinah Governorate. Moreover, employees constitute for 64 per cent of the total number of beneficiaries of the system, followed by 12 per cent being job-seekers. 11 percent of them were retirees, five per cent were students and housewives, and three per cent were self-employed workers.
The system, which started on January, 2018, is a part of a government social security safety net for citizens adversely affected by the removal of fuel subsidies. Those who meet the requirements to get the subsidy may register at www.nss.gov.om.
They are required to fill in a form and then collect the fuel subsidy card from their preferred petrol station. They then have to activate the card by following some simple steps. They may also read the instructions given on the website or may register at the above address.
