Muscat: A new biogas plant will be built to produce energy for the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech).
be’ah signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GUtech concerning the implementation of a biogas plant at the university’s premises.
The produced biogas will then be converted to energy which will be utilized to cover GUtech’s energy demand.
The implementation of biogas plants is part of be’ah waste diversion strategy to divert 60% of municipal solid waste from all landfills across Oman by 2020 and 80% by 2030.
be’ah will collaborate with GUtech to design and develop the biogas plant project.
The CEO of be’ah, Eng. Tariq Al- Amri said: “This project will support Oman’s economy. It will also assist us to achieve one of our main goals of redirecting and utilizing waste to produce energy which in turn will reduce the amount of waste going to landfills. We consider this to be the pilot project for future larger scale implementation throughout the Sultanate.”
Oman Environmental Services Holding Company S.A.O.C "be'ah" was established in 2007. In 2009, Royal Decree No. 46/2009, granted be'ah the mandate and the legal status as the entity responsible for solid waste management in the Sultanate of Oman.
