Muscat: Members of the Majlis Al Shura, at a seminar on Monday, discussed various aspects of the role that Majlis Al Shura plays, including legislative and oversight roles, its powers, follow up of various economic issues in the Sultanate, and appropriate solutions to activate the role of its Standing Committees.
The members set up a working group to study the ideas and proposals discussed in the seminar, which was held in the presence of Khalid bin Hilal Al Ma'awali, Chairman of Majlis Al Shura, his two deputies and Sheikh Ali bin Nasser Al Mahrouqi, Secretary General of Majlis Al Shura.
The members reviewed two important issues, namely the current economic situation in the Sultanate in terms of rationalising spending in the aftermath of the fall in oil prices, as well as ways to diversify the sources of income and find alternative sources.
The members praised the procedural steps adopted by the government to rationalize spending and reduce deficits.
The members discussed various work mechanisms of the Majlis Al Shura, its internal regulations, its relationship with its committees, as well as ways to strengthen ties with the Council of Ministers. It also discussed activating the supervisory role of the Majlis Al Shura and ways to ensure more transparency in its work and tasks.
The members, who reviewed certain solutions and proposals, urged the government to revive the market plan and continue implementing development projects, with a focus on the private sector to reduce the number of jobseekers. They also urged the government to continue addressing the anticipated challenges and deepen the partnership between the Majlis A’Shura and the Council of Ministers in all development related aspects.
The members underlined the importance of focusing on the tourism sector to support the national economy and ensure that it contributes more to the gross domestic product (GDP). They also discussed the mechanism to implement the "Oman 2020” economic strategy and the five-year plans, besides ensuring commercial competition among various governorates of the Sultanate.
Youth committee
The Youth and Human Resources Committee at the Majlis Al Shura also discussed a number of topics of concern to the youth in the Sultanate. It also discussed topics related to human resources at the governmental and private units, most importantly challenges facing Omanisation at the senior and supervisory level jobs in the private sector.
This came during the 4th meeting of the committee for the first annual sitting of the 8th term under the chair of Mohammed bin Salim Al Busaidi, head of the committee.
