MADRID-- FC Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal said Monday that winning the Champions League is a "matter of fate" as the Spanish club seeks its first European title since 2015.
Speaking to ON Sport while on international duty with Spain, Yamal said success in the competition requires more than simply performing well.
"It all comes down to fate. The Champions League isn't decided in a single match," Yamal said.
"You need luck alongside experience, and these things build up year after year," he added, saying he hoped "luck is on our side this year."
Barcelona has not won the Champions League since beating Juventus in the 2015 final, and Yamal said the team was determined to end that wait.
"We are playing to win the trophy, and we are taking it seriously," he said. "We want to win and bring the trophy back to Barcelona."
Barcelona has started the season with seven consecutive wins in La Liga and another in the Champions League, and Yamal said the team had improved in both performance and quality.
"We are in a very good run of form and are eager to keep playing entertaining, exciting football," he said.
Yamal credited new signings Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi for settling in quickly while also highlighting the growing chemistry among the club's established players.
"We all play with the same winning mentality, and we'll always do what we believe is best for the team," Yamal said. "We're a big family, and we always want to win."
