Saudi Arabia beat Kuwait 1–0 in the Gulf Cup

JEDDAH — Saudi Arabia defeated Kuwait 1-0 on Thursday to move to the top of Group A at the Gulf Cup (Gulf 27), with the decisive goal coming from a second-half own goal by Kuwait defender Youssef Al-Haqan.

The hosts controlled much of the first half but struggled to convert their dominance into goals. Saudi Arabia appeared to take the lead when Mohammed Abu Shamat found the net, but the goal was disallowed after a foul on his teammate Mohammed Kanno in the buildup.

The pattern continued after the interval, with coach Georgios Donis' side maintaining pressure as Kuwait defended compactly and limited the space available to Saudi Arabia's attackers.

Saudi Arabia finally broke the deadlock when winger Maher Al-Hamami made his way down the left flank and delivered a cross into the area. Al-Haqan attempted to clear the ball but inadvertently directed it into his own goal.

The victory lifted Saudi Arabia to the top of Group A after Iraq and Oman played out a 1-1 draw earlier in the day.
