Al Rawahi nets equaliser as Oman hold Iraq in Gulf Cup opener

MUSCAT: Oman’s Nasser Al Rawahi scored a second-half equaliser as the Red Warriors fought back from an early goal to share the spoils in a 1-1 draw in the opening Group A match of the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup at the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday.

Iraq dealt an early blow as Mohammed Qasim collected a ball inside the penalty area and lashed it into the net with a powerful left-footed finish in the sixth minute of the match.

Oman fought back after being a goal down at the interval when Nasser Al Rawahi scored the much-needed equaliser in the 67th minute, bursting down the left flank before drilling into the back of the Iraqi net.

Both sides pick up their first point of the group stage, with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait set to meet in the same group later tonight.
