Nama Water Services advances sustainable water management through technology and ESG

Muscat: Nama Water Services is advancing a new operational model aimed at strengthening the sustainability, efficiency and resilience of Oman’s water sector by integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles into its operations and institutional decision-making.

The company said water resources management is a fundamental pillar of sustainable development, water security, economic stability and the well-being of communities.

Nama Water Services is implementing a roadmap extending to 2027, aligned with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards. The roadmap focuses on developing policies and frameworks, strengthening operational integration and pursuing continuous improvement, with the aim of enhancing the company’s readiness for internationally recognised sustainability and governance ratings.

Engineer Ahmed bin Rashid Al-Khamisi, CEO of Business Assurance and Excellence at Nama Water Services, said the company is integrating ESG principles across its operations and strategic decisions in support of Oman Vision 2040.

He said the company is also developing an operational system based on data and artificial intelligence, while employing advanced technologies across various processes, viewing water as a long-term investment in the stability and resilience of the future.

The company has also developed and launched a financial sustainability framework aimed at expanding the use of sustainable financing instruments, including green, blue and social bonds, to fund projects delivering positive environmental and social impacts.

Al-Khamisi noted that expanding low-emission solutions and renewable energy projects forms an important part of the company’s strategy to build a more efficient, low-emission operational system, support net-zero objectives and reduce long-term environmental impacts.

He also highlighted the Green Harvest initiative as one of the pathways supporting climate resilience by maximising the use of natural resources and reducing the effects of environmental and climatic fluctuations.

Serving more than 4 million beneficiaries

Nama Water Services currently serves more than 4 million beneficiaries through an operational system covering Oman’s various governorates.

The company’s local added value exceeded OMR 100 million during the past year, underscoring its contribution to the national economy, support for small and medium enterprises and promotion of local content.

Engineer Riya bint Ali Al-Abri, Director of the Environment, Society and Governance Project at Nama Water Services, said ESG principles are key strategic enablers for sustainable resource management and strengthening the water sector’s preparedness for accelerating environmental and climate challenges.

She said their adoption contributes to more efficient resource use, lower environmental impact and the development of sustainable projects based on innovation and digital transformation.

The approach also supports a more adaptable operating system, a fair workplace that promotes equal opportunities and national competencies, as well as community initiatives and local development.

Nama Water Services said it will continue moving towards more sustainable and innovative water-resource management through an integrated model combining technology, governance, operational excellence and sustainability.
