Gulf network for absolute gravimetric measurements established

Muscat: A programme to establish a Gulf network for absolute gravimetric measurements commenced on Monday at the National Centre for Measurement and Calibration. The centre operates under the Directorate General of Specifications and Metrology within the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion. The programme utilises the high-precision FG5-X absolute gravimeter in accordance with approved international standards.

The three-day programme aims to establish a precise regional network for absolute gravimetry. It also seeks to link this network to the International System of Units (SI). The programme includes specialised workshops and lectures on the significance of gravity values and their influence on measurements and calibration.

Participants will learn the methodology for calculating gravity values using the FG5-X absolute gravimeter. Instruction will also cover the uncertainty components affecting gravity calculations. The importance of absolute reference gravity points for geological survey operations will be highlighted. Furthermore, the programme involves the explanation and analysis of gravimetric measurement results. This will facilitate the transfer of technical knowledge and the exchange of expertise among member states.

A specialised technical team from the National Centre for Measurement and Calibration in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is participating in the programme. This team serves as the project's adopting and implementing entity. They are working in collaboration with the National Centre for Measurement and Calibration in the Sultanate of Oman.
