Economy passengers to get beds in the sky

MUSCAT: In a major innovation set to redefine long-haul travel, Air New Zealand has announced that economy class passengers will soon be able to sleep in lie-flat beds onboard its aircraft.

The airline revealed that its world-first Economy Skynest™ will open for bookings from May 18, 2026, and will be introduced on its new fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner planes later this year.

The Skynest features six lie-flat sleeping pods, available to both Economy and Premium Economy passengers, offering a chance to rest properly on long-haul flights. Unlike traditional seating, passengers will be able to stretch out fully in bunk-style beds at cruising altitude.

According to the airline, the beds will be offered as a paid add-on, with passengers booking time slots of around four hours rather than access for the full journey. While official pricing is yet to be confirmed, industry estimates suggest the service could cost between $400 and $800 (approximately OMR 150 to 300) per session.

Due to limited availability, passengers will use the pods in rotation, with cabin crew preparing and sanitising each bed between uses.

“At 30,000 feet, the future of Economy is taking shape,” the airline said, noting that the initiative is part of its broader effort to enhance passenger comfort by offering more flexibility and choice.

The Skynest is expected to debut on ultra long-haul routes, including flights from Auckland to New York City and Chicago—some of the longest commercial flights in the world, often exceeding 15 hours.

Aviation experts say the move could significantly improve the travel experience for economy passengers and may set a new benchmark for airlines globally, bridging the gap between standard seating and premium cabin comfort.
