Weather Alert: Heavy rains, thunderstorms expected in parts of Oman, warns CAA

Muscat: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued an official weather alert for Musandam Governorate, warning residents and visitors of an expected period of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. The alert, issued by the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Center, emphasises the high risk of flash floods and dangerous sea conditions.

According to the CAA’s National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Center, rainfall amounts are forecasted to range between 20 to 60 mm, accompanied by strong downdraft winds reaching speeds of 28 to 64 km/h (15–35 knots). These conditions are likely to trigger flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas.

Affected areas beyond Musandam

While Musandam is the primary area of concern, the warning indicates that scattered thunderstorms will continue over:

Al Buraimi

North and South Al Batinah

Parts of Al Hajar Mountains

These areas should also be prepared for potential runoff in streams and valleys (localised flash floods).

Safety Instructions

The CAA urges the public to prioritise safety and follow these precautions throughout the alert period:

❌ Avoid Crossing Valleys (Wadis): Do not attempt to cross them, even if the water flow appears low.

🚫 Stay Away from Low-Lying Areas: These areas are most prone to rapid flooding.

⛵ Refrain from Sea Activities: Sailors, fishermen, and beachgoers should avoid venturing out due to high waves and rough seas.
