Muscat: The 2025 Para Sailing World Championship officially commenced in Al Mussanah, South Al Batinah Governorate, marking a historic milestone as Oman Sail hosts the event for the first time globally. The championship brings together 155 sailors from 37 countries and will run until December 8.

The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Azzan bin Qais Al Said, President of the Oman Olympic Committee, and attended by David Graham, CEO of World Sailing, along with senior officials and representatives from regional and international sailing federations.

The event featured the official hoisting of the championship flag by the patron of the ceremony, accompanied by Dr. Khamis Al Jabri, CEO of Oman Sail, signaling the formal start of the competition.

In his opening remarks, David Graham declared the championship officially open, highlighting the spirit of unity and inclusivity that defines this inaugural edition. The ceremony included a vibrant parade of participating nations’ flags and a multimedia presentation celebrating the event’s core values.

Dr. Khamis bin Salem Al Jabri emphasized that hosting the first-ever Para Sailing World Championship in Oman—coinciding with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities—reflects the nation’s commitment to empowerment, equality, and using sport as a bridge for peace and inclusion.

Haitham bin Mohammed Al Ghassani, Director General of Tourism Promotion at the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, noted that the ministry’s partnership in hosting the championship underscores its dedication to supporting sports events and promoting sports tourism. He added that the wide international participation makes this edition the largest in the history of para sailing.

Participants will also enjoy guided tours of cultural and tourist landmarks across South Al Batinah and other governorates, offering them a glimpse into Oman’s rich heritage and natural beauty.
