Muscat: A team of specialised Omani medical professionals at the National Heart and Vascular Centre, Royal Hospital, has successfully performed an artificial heart implantation surgery for a female patient suffering from severe heart muscle failure. This is the first operation of its kind at the centre and marks a significant milestone in the development of advanced heart failure treatments in Oman.
The surgical team, led by Dr. Walid Bader Al-Badi and Dr. Qasim Saleh Al-Abri, completed the four-hour procedure, followed by intensive medical care until the patient's condition stabilized and she was discharged from the hospital. She will continue to be monitored by the heart failure treatment team at the centre.
Dr. Walid Bader Al-Badi, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Royal Hospital, explained that the artificial heart was implanted in the left side of the heart, supporting the natural heart function and enabling it to pump blood efficiently to various parts of the body.
Dr. Qasim Saleh Al-Abri, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the National Heart and Vascular Centre, expressed his delight at adding this advanced procedure to the centre's surgical services, highlighting its potential to improve the quality of life for heart failure patients.
The patient expressed her deep gratitude to the medical team, noting significant improvements in her condition following the surgery.
The artificial heart is an advanced treatment option for patients with severe heart muscle failure, serving as a bridge to heart transplantation or a permanent solution in some cases.
This achievement reflects the National Heart and Vascular Centre's commitment to adopting cutting-edge medical technologies and enhancing integrated healthcare services, aligning with Oman Vision 2040's goals for healthcare development and improving citizens' quality of life.
