
Muscat: Acting in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is organising a two-day workshop in Muscat titled “Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture in the Near East and North Africa (Mena) region”.
The workshop is being attended by representatives of Mena countries, in addition to specialists, experts and representatives of public, private and academic bodies.
The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of Dr. Saud bin Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.
The Sultanate of Oman’s hosting the workshop constitutes part of the country's efforts to support sustainability in the aquaculture sector, said Dr. Dawood bin Sulaiman Al Yahya’ee, Director General of Fisheries Research at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.
Al Yahya’ee added that the workshop reflects the Ministry’s conviction in the importance of integration among Mena countries. The event provides an opportunity to exchange experiences in the field of sustainability and to build networks of communication among the participants, he added.
Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Mazru’ee, Senior Fisheries and Aquaculture Officer at FAO Regional Office, said that the workshop assumes significance amid increased demand to enhance food security and develop a sustainable aquaculture sector.
