Oman's Public Prosecution handles over 46,000 cases in 2024

MuscatThe annual conference of the Public Prosecution commenced, reviewing key performance indicators and statistics from the previous year. Dr. Rashid bin Obaid Al Kaabi, Assistant Public Prosecutor, revealed that the number of crimes against children increased to 1,325 cases in 2024, encompassing harassment, indecent assault, violence, and exposure to delinquency.

The Public Prosecution reported a 22.5% increase in cases referred to the authority in 2024 compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 46,359 cases. This included 43,957 misdemeanors, 2,281 felonies, and 121 cases of violations, administrative complaints, and incidents.

The number of defendants also rose significantly, reaching 58,858, with 89.2% being male, 1.8% minors, and 46.8% foreign nationals. This represents a 23.5% increase compared to 2023.

The Public Prosecution demonstrated a high level of efficiency, achieving a 97.9% completion rate in processing cases, whether through referral, filing, or issuing a criminal order. The success rate for cases where the court followed the Public Prosecution's actions (convictions or upholding filing decisions) was 97.6%.
