Oman National Day: A blend of tradition and modernity

As the country is celebrating the 54th National Day, Omanis now find that the rich tradition of their ancestors can blend well with modern life. Young Omanis now find it is worth exploring and exciting as they try to create a mix of both.

Of course, it is not easy to bring the two worlds together. To find a balancing act between the two can be both a challenge but invigorating at the same time. Omanis have always fiercely defended their traditions that have survived for over a thousand years. The challenges were many in the past but local traditions have always been well preserved.

It is another National Day and our heritage is commemorated all over the country in different ways. The culture of Oman has endured for years and will always be respected. As we look back in the last half century, we saw many challenges but each one of them were laid to rest. As a matter of fact, we can only look forward for another fifty years of peace and prosperity.

No nation in the world is without prejudices but Oman has smoothed them all out in a very amicable way and will continue to do so in the future. But again, like any other country, our youths will always play a pivotal role to move the nation forward. No one can predict precisely the challenges of the next fifty years but with proper awareness and good vision, the future will take care of itself. But our youths may need one help from us. We need to navigate them on the sometimes turbulent sea to the future so they can celebrate the 100th National Day Anniversary with even bigger prosperity than we have now. Hopefully, it will be the defining times for both the country and them.

Going back to our culture and tradition, it will not be easy for them to keep up our heritage as time moves forward. As where we are now, it is not a clear cut what will happen in the next fifty years. But we are hopeful. In other words, the reigns of development will not be in our hands then. The youths of today will hold the steering wheel of the country at that time.

In the 15th National Day Speech, late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour, the Founder of the first Renaissance of Oman, said, “People who do not respect their heritage, have no present or future.”

He was absolutely right and his words rings true now many years after that memorable speech. Preserving heritage with the fast moving world is not an easy feat.

How the future generations will do it is hard for us to see. However, we are confident they will find a way and chart their future that their ancestors, which is us now, would be proud of them.

As for now, we are all proud of Oman’s great achievements of the past. The country has always remained steadfast to the progress and development, no matter what challenges are on the path towards prosperity. In conclusion, let’s all celebrate our National Day and be proud of the country and we are looking forward for many more to come.
