Muscat: A specialised medical team from the Royal Hospital’s National Centre for Cardiac Medicine and Surgery (NCCMS) performed eight complex operations using the Orbital Atherectomy technique for the first time in the Sultanate of Oman.
Dr. Adel Ali Al Jabri, consultant in interventional cardiology and catheterization at the NCCMS, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that this service, first introduced in June 2022, showed encouraging results that prompted the medical team to continue using it to treat patients suffering from complex arterial blockages.
He added that another technique, the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) technology, was also introduced for the first time in the Sultanate of Oman during the same period. This, he explained, helped in diagnosis and treatment of complex arterial cases.
Dr. Adel pointed out that the Orbital Atherectomy technique is an advanced method in treating calcified arterial blockages that cannot be treated by using traditional methods. He added that the technique allowed the removal of calcific deposits with high precision, without harming the surrounding healthy tissue.
Dr. Adel reported that the OCT technology complements the Orbital Atherectomy technique, as it provides high-resolution images of blood vessels. This, he added, helps doctors diagnose arterial blockages more accurately and decide appropriate treatment for each patient’s case.
The introduction of these two advanced technologies at the NCCMS represents a significant step forward in providing the best possible care for patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases.
