Oman’s fencers claim two gold and a silver at GCC Youth Games

Muscat: Oman fencing teams continued to strike a rich haul of medals as they bagged two gold and a silver at the ongoing first GCC Youth Games in the UAE on Tuesday.

The medals kitty was further boosted when the swimmers picked two bronze on a successful day for Oman.

At the Zayed Sports Complex in Fujairah, Oman fencers capped a successful outing as they picked a total of 11 medals, including three on the concluding day on Tuesday.

With the addition of five more medals, Oman overall tally rose to 64, including six won by in para athletes.

The regular athletes have so far won 58 medals, which include 18 gold, 13 silver and 27 bronze medals in 15 sports.

The fencing team won the gold in the men’s epée and a silver medal in men’s foil, while another gold was won in women’s epée.

The boys’ team included Ahmed Kaskas, Saeed Al Shuaibi, Ali Al Busaidy and Ammar Al Azizi while the women’s team included Jana Al Shariji, Salma Al Dughaishi,Ghazal Al Faliti and Israa Al Siyabi.

Earlier on Monday, Oman fencers had won a total of eight medals.Speaking after the team gold, Saeed Al Shuaibi said: “I am happy to win medals for my country. I won two bronze on the first day, and today we won a gold and a silver. The competition was strong but we prepared well for this event and the domestic camps prior to the event helped us immensely.”

Elsewhere, Oman’s Moath Khamis claimed a bronze in the 50m freestyle race while the second medal was claimed by Husain Tariq in 200m breaststroke.
