Shura Council discusses legislative, oversight and developmental topics

Muscat– The Shura Council discussed a number of legislative, oversight, and developmental topics during its twenty-first regular session of the third ordinary sitting of the tenth term.

The items included the proposed draft law on sanctions and alternative penal measures, as well as the unified draft law on volunteer work in the GCC countries. The session was chaired by Khalid Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council.

The session’s agenda included a briefing by the members on several draft laws and agreements referred to the Council by the government. This forms part of the ongoing legislative procedures undertaken in accordance with the provisions and regulations of the Council of Oman Law.

During the session, the Council was also briefed on the draft environmental law. This draft seeks to develop the legislative system governing environmental protection and natural resource conservation, reinforce the requirements of sustainable development, and respond to emerging environmental issues and challenges associated with climate change and biodiversity preservation.

The session also addressed the briefing on the draft agreement between the Government of the Sultanate of Oman and the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan regarding the elimination of double taxation with respect to taxes on income and the prevention of tax evasion.

The session also featured a discussion of the report submitted by the Economic and Financial Committee concerning the expressed interest regarding the assessment of the status of local industries in the Sultanate of Oman.

The session further included a discussion of the report of the Committee on Education Research and Innovation concerning the expressed interest regarding the expansion of public-private partnership in the areas of early childhood education, and the care of academically outstanding students, gifted students, and students with disabilities.

The session was attended by the members of the Council and the Secretary General of the Shura Council.
